At AAF’s Clean Air Innovation and Research (AIR) Center, science, technology, and real-world testing come together to advance the future of clean air. The work conducted here goes beyond the laboratory, using advanced testing and research to better understand filtration performance and solve complex air quality challenges. Research at the AIR Center provides valuable insights into how airborne contaminants behave and how effective filtration and contamination control strategies can help address them. These findings help customers make informed decisions to improve air quality, protect occupants, and support operational performance. At the heart of the AIR Center is a commitment to continuous innovation, applying research and expertise to develop solutions for today’s air quality challenges while preparing for what comes next.

AAF's 33,000-square-foot Clean AIR Center brings together dedicated filter, materials, and biosafety laboratories designed to evaluate filtration under controlled and real-world conditions. New AAF filter designs undergo rigorous testing before release, while existing products are continually evaluated for opportunities to improve performance.

Testing can simulate the challenges filters encounter in the field, from particulate loading to environmental contaminants, providing data that helps AAF understand how filtration performs beyond standard laboratory conditions.

The Clean AIR Center also supports testing to recognized industry standards and protocols, including ASHRAE 52.2, ISO 16890, and UL 900, with a dedicated UL filter testing room.

Filter Testing

Advancing the state of IAQ technology is at the heart of AAF’s 33,000-sq.-ft. Clean AIR Center. Engineers put every new AAF filter design through rigorous testing before it is released. Existing AAF filtration products are also tested, as technicians look for ways to make them perform even better.

Media & Materials Lab

The most crucial component of a filter is its media. The Clean AIR Center has a lab dedicated to analyzing filter media performance. New filter media can go from concept to in-house theoretical modeling to prototype in just hours. Then, testing begins in the Center’s ASHRAE test ducts.

Biosafety Lab

AAF customers in the agriculture industry benefit from the Center’s capacity for biological testing. Testing for PRRS, PED and Influenza A can help them take action against viral and biological threats.

Research & Development

Our Research & Development programs facilitate innovation to benefit people and the planet. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Clean AIR Center confirmed that MERV-rated air filters could reduce the presence of airborne virus-carrying particles. It’s just one example of how R&D can help create a safer, more sustainable world for all.

Standards & Guidelines

Many organizations around the world have established trusted standards, guidelines and recommendations for Indoor Air Quality and Indoor Environmental Quality. American Air Filter follows the guidance of these respected entities to provide assurance to our customers.
