Bulk Handling

When dealing with large volumes of powdered material, controlling the dust generated is required to reduce environmental emissions and recover the product preventing additional costs.

Eco-hopper

Tons of powdered material is unloaded every hour into an eco-hopper. The risk of dust spreading through the air during this operation is high and so is the pollution to the environment because of these emissions if not controlled.

Silo Venting

An efficient material flow is needed to ensure silo loading and discharging operations. When properly sized, the air filtration solution can support the air pressure balance needed, improving ventilation, at the same time, avoiding dust is spread into the atmosphere and lost during the process.

Ship, Truck & Train Loading

Different types of telescopic bags can be used in this process; however, mid-large airflows will need to be handled to maintain an optimum operational performance.

For powdered material that presents a risk of explosion, ATEX certified dust collectors will be required to increase safety and avoid fire hazards.

In the case of ship loading, the operation needs to be done as fast as possible due to the costs related to docking. The speed required generates more dust, and thus a higher filtration capacity is needed to keep environmental emissions controlled. Additionally, for the eco-hoppers, the proximity to the sea will determine if the use of anti-corrosion paint on the dust collectors is necessary.

Ship, Truck, & Train Unloading

Ship, Truck & Train Unloading

Directly integrated dust collectors are highly recommended to ensure no environmental contamination is produced while unloading dry bulk from ships, trucks, or trains. They will not only capture the volatile particles but will also help to recover the product and return it to the process, resulting in savings.

Unloading is a relatively dusty operation where huge dust concentrations are generated. Several collection points will be required and considering they are going to be integrated, they should be as light and compact as possible to maximise the number of units allowed within the available space.

An ATEX certification will be mandatory if explosive dust is handled, preventing possible fire risks.

Classification Screens - 50/50

Classification Screens

A significant volume of dust is generated during the screening and material classification process. Regardless of indoor or outdoor location, a dust collector is required to avoid emissions and increase process safety.

As in any application, the characteristics of the material need to be considered, when potentially explosive bulk is handled, ATEX certification on the dust collector will be required.

Due to the high frequency vibrations usually generated by screening systems, a flexible connection over the screen instead of a direct integration of the filtration unit will ensure efficient performance, recovering the product and returning it back to process.

Weighing

Small dust concentrations are usually generated during the weight dosing before final packaging. This does not mean a dust collector is not needed. As weighing machines are usually located inside the plant or the facility, the use of a dust collector becomes very important to reduce emissions and to maintain an indoor air quality that ensures a safe workplace.

When selecting a dust collector for this application it is important to know the type of bulk material handled, if the products are explosive an ATEX certification will be required and additionally fire risk protection and prevention systems on the dust collectors will also be needed.

Defining the air filtration solution that meets the application needs

Understanding the application, its performance, needs, and requirements is key to determining the best air filtration solution that will not only support the process but also improve it, ensuring safety levels both for the operators and the environment.

Bulk handling applications can be found in several industries: from the food and beverage sector to industrial minerals, chemicals, etc. Depending on the type of material and its final use, the product collected by the filtration unit could be returned to the process.

Another important factor to take into condition when referring to bulk material is the typology. If explosive, ATEX certified equipment will be required, with fire risk prevention systems such as relief valves or explosion panels to protect from deflagration.

Original Equipment Manufacturing Partnership

Bag filtration is the technology typically applied for this type of larger transport application, though for smaller operations, airflows, and types of dust, cartridge filters can also be a very efficient solution.

AAF’s comprehensive range of dust collectors with compact configurations, easy maintenance, and possible direct integration into the process will meet the requirements of this processes.

These standardised solutions and our custom services provide the perfect bundle for conveying and transportation machinery Original Equipment Manufacturers, creating a plug & play solution that simplifies the end user’s commission and start-up.
