ESB Coolkeeragh Power Station Filter Replacement
5Mins
Coolkeeragh ESB’s 400MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station is a cornerstone of Northern Ireland’s energy infrastructure. Since it began operating in 2005, the plant has consistently delivered reliable power through its advanced system, featuring a 260MW General Electric gas turbine and a 140MW Alstom steam turbine. Primarily fuelled by natural gas, the power station can also switch to ultra-low sulphur diesel when necessary, ensuring flexibility in energy generation. The electricity produced is seamlessly integrated into the Northern Ireland Electricity Networks (NIEN) transmission system, providing a stable and secure power supply.
In November 2024, Coolkeeragh ESB faced a significant challenge during a planned outage to replace two out of its three filter stages. This required significant planning and execution to avoid operational disruptions.
