HEPA filters utilized in the United States nuclear industry are those that meet and are qualified in accordance with the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) AG-1 Code on Nuclear Air and Gas Treatment section FC.

The filter medium in AAF Flanders’ Nuclear Grade filter elements is glass composed of boron silicate microfiber, which contains a waterproofing binder that adds strength under both wet and dry conditions. AAF Flanders manufactures its own filter media to meet or exceed the requirements of ASME AG-1 Section FC, Mandatory Appendix FC-I. 

AAF Flanders manufactures both conventional separator style and PureForm separatorless HEPA filters. To make a separator style filter, the media is folded over corrugated aluminum separators with hemmed edges to separate the pleats in the filter pack. 

The PureForm filter offers many advantages over conventional separator style HEPA filters:
  • More usable media area for longer service life because of higher DHC
  • Reduced cost of ownership because of longer service life
  • Maximum utilization of the media
  • Media pack can be incinerated
Fire-retardant solid urethane is used to bond the filter element to its integral case. Maximum temperature rating for this sealant is 250°F.

Plywood 3/4 - inch fire-retardant plywood cases are ideal for many applications, and are easier to incinerate or break down for disposal than metal case filters are. However, they are not recommended for use in systems with high moisture content or high temperature, because they may warp or support biological growth. Stainless steel case materials should be used in moisture-laden applications.

The technique used for sealing the filter in service determines the selection of the filter case style. 

Gel Seal — A knife edge in the filter housing mates into a gel filled channel provided on the filter. BluJel® was developed by AAF Flanders and is our standard gel seal material. In most cases, gel seal filters are easier and quicker to change out than gasketed filters.

Gasket Seal —
Metal case gasketed filters are provided with flanges for the placement of the gasket. On wooden cases, the gasket is applied to the face of the case. Gasketed filters for normal service are supplied with closed cell sponge neoprene (1/4” x 3/4”). A filter clamping mechanism is typically used to maintain sealing pressure on gasketed filters, which have a tendency to develop bypass leaks, primarily because of compression set.
