Casting is a manufacturing process in which a liquid material is usually poured (could be injected) into a mold and then allowed to solidify. The cooled casting is then ejected or broken out of the mold to release it for onward processing. Usually the material to form the casting is molten metal but it could also be concrete, plaster, or epoxy. In hot metal casting metallic fume is likely to be released during the pouring operation and may be expected to rise because of its thermal buoyancy. This fugitive fume should be captured or contained by means of an enclosure, canopy or hood. The fume can be conveyed through duct work to a collector or filter that allows only cleaned air to pass through for release to atmosphere.
